Maastricht has a reputation as a city with a rich cultural heritage and a very diverse international community. If you are a non-EU student planning to pursue your studies in Maastricht, it’s crucial to understand the regulations and requirements you’ll encounter during your stay. In this blog entry, we will explore the key regulations that non-EU students should be aware of when coming to Maastricht.

1. Visa and residence permit

Prior to coming to Maastricht, students from non-European Union (EU) countries need to acquire a student visa, which can be referred to as an entry visa or provisional residence permit (MVV). This visa is obtained from the Dutch embassy or consulate in their home nation and grants permission to enter the Netherlands and remains for a duration exceeding 90 days. Upon arrival in Maastricht, students are required to apply for a residence permit (VVR) at the Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND). The residence permit is crucial for maintaining legal status throughout their studies and must be renewed on an annual basis.

2. Health insurance

In the Netherlands, it is required for all students, regardless of their nationality, to have health insurance. This includes non-EU students. Upon arriving in Maastricht, you must ensure that you have health insurance within four months. Dutch health insurance typically includes essential healthcare services, and there are multiple insurance providers to choose from. It is important to thoroughly explore different options and choose a plan that fits your requirements and financial means.

3. Part—time job

Non-EU students in Maastricht have certain restrictions when it comes to working alongside their studies. While studying, you are allowed to work a maximum of 16 hours per week or full-time during official holidays.

4. Financial matters

To obtain a visa and residence permit for studying in Maastricht, you must show that you possess enough money to sustain yourself financially throughout your academic journey. This condition is in place to guarantee that you can afford your tuition fees, accommodation, living costs, and any additional essential expenses. It is recommended to collect all pertinent financial records and gain a comprehensive understanding of the anticipated expenditures prior to your arrival in Maastricht.
