If you’re considering Maastricht University, there are a few things you should know about that make it stand out from other universities. The two things that drew me to this university were the Problem-Based Learning approach and its international community.

Problem — Based Learning

Personally, I’ve always found traditional lectures overwhelming and I learn best through hands-on experience. That’s why the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) approach at Maastricht University was such a great fit for me. In most of my classes, we work in smaller groups led by students, with a tutor to guide us through the material. This means we get to apply what we’re learning in a practical way, and really engage with the material.

A home for international students

Another thing that really stood out to me about Maastricht University is how international it is. Over 55% of the students here come from outside the Netherlands, which creates a diverse and dynamic community. In fact, UM is the most international university in the Netherlands, which is something I’m really proud to be a part of.

That’s why Maastricht University was chosen by the European Commission to be one of only 17 universities in Europe to be part of the alliance Young Universities for the Future of Europe (YUFE). The YUFE’s main aim is to create a new model for European higher education that promotes student mobility, interdisciplinary education, and community engagement. It seeks to achieve this through collaborative research projects, joint degree programs, and innovative teaching and learning methods that promote active and experiential learning.

Triple Crown Award

One more thing that sets Maastricht University apart is its Triple Crown Accreditation. Only 1% of universities worldwide have achieved this prestigious award, which combines accreditation from three of the leading international accreditation bodies: The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the Association of MBAs (AMBA), and the European Quality Improvement System (EQUIS). This means that UM has demonstrated excellence in teaching, research, and business engagement, making our degree even more valuable.

The Future of the Universities

I also want to touch on how UM is shaping the future of universities. Despite being located in a historic city with medieval architecture, Maastricht University is actually one of the youngest universities in the Netherlands. In fact, it was ranked 9th in the world in the 2021 Times Higher Education Young University Rankings, which lists universities under 50 years old. UM’s commitment to innovation, interdisciplinary research, and sustainability is positioning it as a leader in the future of higher education.

Overall, Maastricht University’s commitment to innovation, internationalization, interdisciplinary research, and sustainability positions it as a leader in the future of universities. By embracing new approaches to education and research, UM is preparing students to be adaptable and innovative in a rapidly changing world.

See you soon in Maastricht!
