Parks

If you have already visited Maastricht, you probably noticed that there are many parks around. Meeting up with friends in a park is a great way to enjoy the weather and being able to socially distance. I made a map where I put the main parks in Maastricht. You can find (1) the city park (my personal favorite), stadspark (2), Griendpark (3), Charles Eyck Park (4), and Frontenpark (5). Of course, these are only the main ones and there are many more that you will discover during your studies here in Maastricht.

The Markt

The Markt is a square situated in the center, right next to the Maas (see map above). In the center of the square, there is the city hall that was built in the 1660’s. It is a great place to have a drink and meet up since there are many bars and restaurants. The market also takes place there every Wednesday and Friday! If you haven’t heard about the market yet, make sure to read Erik’s post from June 8th!

Vrijthof

Vrijoft is the other main square in Maastricht, it is only a few minutes walk from the Markt. You can also find multiple restaurants and bars there and it is near the main shopping street. You are also able to sit on the small stairs near the church and eat a takeaway for example.

Under normal circumstances, many events take place on this square, including the main INKOM events.

Mount St Pieters

Mount St pieters is named after the fortress Sint-Pieter that was built in 1702 to defend the city of Maastricht. Once you walk up, you will be able to contemplate a great view of the city of Maastricht. St pieters has huge open spaces where you can sit and enjoy the weather. It is a great place to watch sunsets. If you prefer moving around, there are many different walks that you can do! Sometimes you even might end up in Belgium!

St Pieters can be considered as a bit more outside of the city center. But it is only a 15 minute walk from SBE and a 10 minute walk from the inner city library. It’s the perfect spot to go for a little walk about studying!

I hope this blog was helpful and gave you a better overview of the top places where you can meet people in Maastricht! Personally, I really recommend checking out St pieters, especially when the weather is nice. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out. Share your opinion about those spots with us once you’ve been! Until then stay safe and see you soon in Maastricht!
